What is flu?
It's a viral infection of the nose, throat and lungs. Unlike a cold, the flu usually comes on suddenly with symptoms that might include fever and/or chills, cough, sore throat, and muscle or body aches. Treatment: Sometimes antiviral medicines can be prescribed early in the illness. Stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever has subsided. If you have a chronic health condition like asthma, diabetes or heart disease or are pregnant, see your doctor promptly. Avoid getting the flu by being vaccinated. WASH your hands OFTEN and use an alcohol-based hand rub if water isn't available. Keep away from people who are coughing or sneezing, and be sure to cover your nose/mouth when you cough or sneeze. Don't touch your face. Maintain good nutrition and increase your intake of water.
Tips
- Olive oil, rich in cholesterol-lowering fats, is linked with a lower risk of stroke and is associated with a heart-healthy diet. Try to implement this hidden benefit oil into your diet.
- Chronic constipation, as per a recent study, is linked with cardiovascular problems, and a higher risk of heart disease. The study group was also found to have high rates of high blood pressure or high cholesterol and was more likely to be eating a low-fiber diet. See your doctor for chronic constipation problems.
Pets
Research confirms that pets do brighten our mood. They improve the well-being, self-esteem and confidence of their owners, and help fend off loneliness. Pets even lead to better fitness by lowering blood pressure and reducing anxiety. In this new year of 2012, may your troubles be less, your blessings be more and may nothing but happiness come through your door!
