Usher and Greeter Guidelines
Arrival Time: 30 minutes prior to service time.
Pre-Service Duties:
- Put on your smile and greet worshipers as a representative of the congregation, council and pastor.
- Distribute bulletins.
- Direct worshipers to available pews (including late arrivals).
- Provide a hearing device for anyone needing one (found in the drawer of bulletin cabinet).
Ushers:
- Placement – See back cover for church’s floor plan.
- One usher at each Fellowship Area door to hand out bulletins. One at Laurel Street entrance to greet and assist. One at parking lot entrance to greet and assist.
- Ushers are to be seated in the last two pews in the rear of the Sanctuary.
Receiving the Offering:
- Ushers proceed to altar rail, take the sacraments forward when going to receive the offering plates. The sacraments will be sitting on the rear window in the fellowship area.
- The first two ushers proceed to the outside at the rail and second two ushers stand in the middle at the rail.
- Receive offering plates from the acolyte.
- Outside ushers depart the altar rail first and proceed to the outside aisles.
- Second pair proceeds to center aisle.
- Please pass the plate through the entire pew whenever possible.
Handling the Offering:
- Compile total worshipers count. Record attendance on the blue slip in the drawer of the bulletin cabinet.
- The bag is also found in the drawer of the bulletin cabinet.
- Place offering in the bag with the attendance slip and return to the altar when the offertory begins or the pastor returns to the altar to greet you. The usher on the right in the first pair should have the plate with the bag in it.
Presentation of Offering:
- The usher on the right side will have the gifts to the Lord and the other ushers will have an empty offering plate.
- Remain at the altar rail
Assisting with Communion:
- Remain at the altar rail and receive communion.
- Two ushers stand at either side of the nave with a tray to collect empty glasses, and two ushers stand down the center aisle ushering people up for communion and collect communion cards. When ushering congregants to the rail, be sure to keep the line moving. There should be enough people lined up to get their cup and to fill the chancel rail when the previous group leaves.
Your importance as an usher can't be overstated. Your impact is enormous both in meeting the needs of people and in keeping the church service running smoothly.
If you are unable to usher, please contact your usher captain as soon as possible
